Hyster%20tyre%20handler%20Otraco%201a[1].JPGTyres on haulage trucks and wheel loaders used in opencast mining can weigh as much as 15 tons or more. Changing these tyres is not a task for the faint-hearted – which is where Southern African Hyster dealer Barloworld Handling and its market-leading range of tyre-handling lift trucks come in.

Barloworld Handling has Hyster tyre handlers in operation in iron ore, coal, platinum and diamond mining in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique. Fitted with IMT tyre-handling attachments, these machines have become the industry standard for handling and changing tyres on mining and construction equipment fast, efficiently, cost-effectively and safely, says Gerhard van Niekerk, Big Truck sales manager at Barloworld Handling.

“Cooperation between Hyster and IMT has ensured the perfect configuration for the application, with the emphasis on speed and operator safety. These tyre handlers offer enhanced visibility, an optimum load centre design of the forklift for maximum stability, as well as hydraulically operated fall-back protection on the attachment so that a technician can safely loosen or fasten bolts in front of the tyre.”

Hyster Big Trucks ranging from the 8t H8XM-6 up to the 32t H32XM-12, in combination with IMT tyre-handling attachments, accurately handle tyre weights between 250 kg and 16 330 kg, with tyre diameters ranging from 710 mm to a colossal 4,166mm.

Using a specialist tyre-handling attachment that integrates fully with the forklift’s controls, a Hyster Big Truck can rotate, tip and side-shift a tyre, providing the flexibility needed to align it to the truck and complete the changing operation without the forklift driver leaving his cab.

The IMT attachment has front pads that firmly grip the tyre in the required position for changing. Operational features of the attachment include lateral shifting, 360 degrees endless forward pad rotation and 100 degrees body rotation – giving the driver flexibility and control from the security of the integrated control console inside the cab of the lift truck. Operation of the tyre-handling attachment is fully hydraulically controlled.

Large tilt capabilities also enable the driver to raise the grip arms to the centre of the tyre without lifting the mast, ensuring visibility over the attachment during travel.

The clamping arms of the IMT attachment have a parallelogram design which helps reduce the attachment width to a minimum while maximising the reach to catch the rim ring of an inner tyre.

Big Truck benefits

Manufactured in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, Hyster Big Trucks benefit from almost 60 years of experience in building lift trucks with lifting capacities over 16 tons. The Nijmegen plant is the global centre for Hyster Big Truck design, development and testing, producing high-capacity forklift trucks as well as empty and laden container handlers and reach stackers.

Extensive customer research feeds the design of every Hyster truck, says Van Niekerk. “From concept to launch, each new product follows a carefully structured development process to confirm that the machine will deliver all the intended benefits to its future users.”

Designed for efficiency and a lower operating cost, Hyster Big Trucks offer an exceptional blend of high productivity, reliable proven components, fuel efficiency and outstanding driver comfort.

Features include:

  • Robust, fuel-efficient Cummins diesel engines
  • A durable Axle-Tech drive axle
  • An auto-shift 3-speed powershift transmission
  • A strong mast for lift heights up to 6,81m
  • Class-leading lifting speeds for maximum productivity
  • Power-on-demand load-sensing hydraulics, which means that the exact amount of oil required for the application is pumped through the system, resulting in less waste, reduced operating temperatures and greater fuel efficiency
  • A hydraulically operated, sliding Vista Cab with advanced ergonomics, ensuring outstanding comfort and all-round visibility
  • Easy serviceability.

“Add to these a reduced turning circle and ease of operation, and the result is ultimate precision and efficiency,” says Van Niekerk.

Multi-purpose

Hyster tyre handlers are available either as dedicated tyre-handling units or with a quick-disconnect feature, enabling the fitting of forks or other attachments for multi-purpose use. Thus the vehicle could for example be turned into a high-capacity forklift for the handling of heavy loads, such as mining vehicle components. As a forklift truck, lift capacity options range from eight to 32 tonnes.

“Hyster and IMT’s fully automated tyre-handling solution not only reduces the risks inherent to the operation but also improves the utilisation times of mining vehicles,” says Van Niekerk. “With wheel loaders and haulage trucks central to the productivity of open cast mines, getting these vehicles moving again quickly has a direct impact on the bottom line.”

Uptime of lift trucks is further ensured through Barloworld Handling’s excellent after-sales infrastructure, which includes a centralised customer support centre, ready parts availability and a countrywide network of trained, experienced Big Truck technicians.
