Reaching out - with Barloworld Handling and Hyster

Hyster big trucks are known for being tough and reliable in arduous applications and for providing a low total cost of ownership in a range of industries. “This is particularly important for high-value assets, required to operate in intense 24/7 operations,” says Gerhard van Niekerk, big truck sales manager at Barloworld Handling.

The Hyster reach stacker series benefits from Hyster’s 80 years of experience designing and building forklift trucks and 60 years of experience manufacturing big trucks with lifting capacities up to 52 tons. Designed for all-round efficiency, Hyster reach stackers offer a unique blend of productivity, reliable components, fuel economy and outstanding driver comfort, says Van Niekerk.

Hyster reach stackers have a proven track record in South Africa. They are in use at container yards, shipping companies running their own container operations, transport companies using reach stackers to reduce the turnaround time of trucks, and in the handling of abnormal-size loads such as boilers, tanks and earthmoving equipment components.

“Acquisition of a reach stacker is the biggest single capital outlay many of these companies make. It is therefore doubly important to ensure that a reach stacker is what’s required for your application and that the model you acquire, will meet both your short-term needs and long-term requirements,” says Van Niekerk. Barloworld Handling undertakes site-application surveys before recommending any equipment. “For example, if no second-row stacking is required, we would advise the customer to acquire a top handler instead of a reach stacker.”

In South Africa, the average six metre container weighs 30 tons including the weight of the container. Obviously, the heavier the container, the more cost-effective it is to ship. “If a reach stacker is unable to stack your heaviest container on site in the second row, you have probably bought an underspecified machine,” says Van Niekerk. “While machine tonnage may be specified at 45 tons, this may have no bearing on second-row stacking capabilities.”

Barloworld Handling predominantly supplies the Hyster RS 45-31 CH reach stacker model to South African customers. This machine is able to stack 45 tons in the first row and 31 tons in the second row. However, Hyster also has machines that can stack 46 tons in the first row and 41 tons in the second row, should additional capacity be required.

FUEL EFFICIENT
Energy-efficient technologies offer proven fuel savings. “We have local data showing the Hyster RS 45-31 CH using as little as 15 litres of fuel per hour stacking 30 ton containers five-high, and this at a rate of 18 containers per machine hour,” says Van Niekerk.
Hyster reach stackers are powered by robust, fuel-efficient Cummins QSM 11 engines. In addition to the Cummins engine technologies, Hyster has introduced performance-optimisation developments which further lower fuel consumption in most applications. These include power on demand, load-sensing hydraulics and engine idling speed and RPM management.
When handling containers under 10 tons, demand for hydraulic oil is reduced due to the regenerative hydraulic system, again optimising fuel economy.

The high-performance power train has a built-in engine and transmission protection system, ensuring maximum reliability and further reducing total cost of ownership, says Van Niekerk.
Designed to achieve maximum space utilisation in container terminals and ports, Hyster reach stackers also provide excellent manoeuvrability and handling speeds with no loss of power at full capacity for demanding loads.
A new boom design offers increased durability, easier maintenance, as well as reduced wear and improved component life. The uniquely wide-spaced boom head provides strong support for the spreader, which makes light work of handling containers and heavy loads.
Hyster reach stackers are supplied as standard with lifting lugs on the spreader attachment, for loads exceeding standard ISO dimensions and for abnormal loads.

DRIVER COMFORT
The hydraulically operated sliding Vista Cab ensures outstanding comfort and all-round visibility for the driver in the toughest applications and extreme weather conditions. This adds to machine productivity.

BACKUP
Maximum uptime is ensured through Barloworld Handling’s excellent aftersales infrastructure, with a national customer support centre, ready parts availability and a countrywide network of factory-trained, experienced technicians.

RESALE VALUE
Resale value is another factor to consider when acquiring a big truck, says Van Niekerk. “The resale value of Hyster big trucks is the best in the industry by far, ensuring further returns on your investment.”

This high resale value is closely linked to the availability of parts for Hyster big trucks, including the older machine models.
Hyster big trucks are manufactured in Nijmegen in the Netherlands. The Nijmegen plant is the global centre for Hyster big truck design, development and testing, producing high-capacity forklift trucks as well as empty and laden container handlers and reach stackers.
Extensive customer research feeds the design of every Hyster truck, says Van Niekerk. “From concept to launch, each new product follows a carefully structured development process to confirm that the machine will deliver all the intended benefits to its future users.”
